Nearly one million euros will be mobilized to promote the consumption of organic products faced with an unprecedented drop in demand, leading to surpluses in certain sectors such as eggs or milk, professionals in the sector announced on Thursday.

"Today, to support producers who arrive on the market after two to three years of conversion and to allow those who wish to convert [to do so], it is essential that demand resumes its progression", underline in a joint press release from the national agency responsible for promoting this method of production (Agence bio), the Natexbio-Maison de la bio business federation and the agricultural inter-professional organizations (milk, fruit and vegetables, meat, etc.).

Finally, 1 real #organic promotion campaign will be carried out this spring jointly by @agence_bio and the interprofessions.

We welcome it!

€1 million is just the start.

The fear of a "deconversion crisis"

A "collective campaign, a first in the history of organic in France", will be launched in May for an amount of nearly one million euros, is it added in the text published on the sidelines of the Salon de l' Agriculture.

"For the occasion, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food has allocated to the Organic Agency an exceptional budget of 400,000 euros, to which are added the exceptional budgets" of Natexbio-Maison de la bio as well as interprofessional organizations milk (Cniel) and fruit and vegetables (Interfel).

"It is absolutely necessary that the meat sectors follow suit and not wait for the market to settle to react," said the president of the National Federation of Organic Agriculture (Fnab) Philippe Camburet, in a separate press release.

After flourishing years, marked by double-digit growth, the consumption of organic products began to decline in 2021, even as many producers arrived on the market at the end of their conversion.

Overproduction has been observed, especially in the milk, egg or apple sectors.

"Production has been in a growth crisis for about six months" and raises fears of "a deconversion crisis", with producers forced to turn away from this mode of production, the first vice-president of the producers' association said on Tuesday. of milk Ghislain de Viron, during a press conference.

France is the leading European country in organic production, with 13% of farms involved in this mode of production.
