After the sea swallowed his family, "Rewar" returns as an orphan to Kurdistan

The child "Rewar Rebwar", the only survivor of a family whose members drowned while trying to cross to Europe by sailing a boat in the Aegean Sea from Turkey, returned to his country, Iraqi Kurdistan, on Friday.

The 11-year-old boy was stuck during the past months by the Greek authorities after the boat carrying his family sank at the end of last year.

Yesterday, the regional government returned him to Erbil Governorate and handed him over to his family.

The child was received at Erbil International Airport by his parents and a representative of the regional government, who told Kurdish media: "I am happy to return to Kurdistan, but I am sad because my family is not with me."

The Rebwar family consisted of 5 members, 4 of whom died in the sinking of the boat.

The Kurdish family perished in December 2021, while trying to cross to Europe on a boat carrying much more than its load.

The child, Rewar, was among 17 people who survived the boat carrying 70 migrants trying to reach Europe illegally through the Aegean Sea, off the Greek coast.
