The Du galo Dal Yan Dam Ver charter was approved by the municipal council of Saint-Brieuc (Côtes-d'Armor), in February 2022. The city will, via this tool, promote the use of the Welsh language in associations , businesses and communities.
Gallo is the second local regional language after Breton, reports
Le Penthièvre
.
"We are the first major city in Brittany to have signed the charter, it is a strong first act, seven months after the start of my mandate", welcomed Ludovic Le Moignic, deputy councilor for cultures in Brittany.
Saint-Brieuc, for example, is written in French, Breton and Gallo on the signs at the entrance to the town.
Preservation of a language
By adhering to this charter, the town hall allows the preservation but also the transmission of this regional language.
A total of 32 municipalities, most of which have less than 10,000 inhabitants, have signed the document.
Many large Breton cities such as Rennes or Saint-Malo (Ille-et-Vilaine) remain reluctant.
