“The hour is serious” for the Breton fishermen.

Like many players, they are worried about soaring diesel prices which could very quickly have disastrous consequences for the profession.

“The increase affects all sectors and all of the operating costs borne by fishing companies are on the rise (fishing equipment, repairs, maintenance).

Fishing vessels are about to stop their activities”, warn the fisheries committees of Brittany.

They also deplore that the government and the European authorities "remain deaf" to their arrests.

The situation has "become absolutely untenable, we have broken the 2012 record", explains Jacques Doudet, secretary general of the Brittany fisheries committee.

Wages soon to be paid more?

The committees point out that "fish is bought from fishermen via an auction system" and that "fishermen are unable to pass on the increase in operating costs to the price at which they sell the fish".

“The salaries of the crews depend on the turnover of the ships.

The situation is getting worse hour by hour, turnover is deteriorating very quickly and many companies will no longer be able to pay salaries in the next four or five days, ”warned the Breton fisheries committees.

Soaring fuel prices, which have been hitting new highs for weeks, have been fueled by the global economic recovery and still tight supply from major oil-producing countries.

This trend has been exacerbated since the start of Russia's invasion of Ukraine last week.
