China News Agency, Xining, March 3 (Reporter Sun Rui) March 3, 2022 is the 9th "World Wildlife Day".

On the same day, the Qinghai Yuanshangcao Nature Conservation Center released the survey results of snow leopards at the source of the Yellow River. A variety of endangered wild animals such as snow leopards, lynxes, leopard cats, desert cats, and hozens have been recorded in the source area of the Yellow River.

The theme of World Wildlife Day 2022 is "Restore key species, restore ecosystems" and aims to draw attention to the conservation status of some of the most critically endangered species of wildlife.

According to Nga Wang, Secretary General of Qinghai Yuanshangcao Nature Conservation Center, since 2017, Sanjiangyuan National Park, Qinghai Yuanshangcao Nature Conservation Center and World Wildlife Fund (WWF) have jointly launched the Yellow River Source Snow Leopard Protection Project. In order to fill the blank of snow leopard survey in the Yellow River source area of Sanjiangyuan National Park, we will explore and take action to deal with the local snow leopard protection problem.

The source region of the Yellow River is an important distribution area for snow leopards, and the investigation and protection of snow leopards in the region is very important.

In order to make up for the gap in the distribution survey of the flagship species of snow leopard in the source region of the Yellow River, with the support of the Qinghai Forestry and Grassland Bureau and the Guoluo Prefecture Forestry and Grassland Bureau, the Qinghai Province Yuanshang Grassland Nature Conservation Center conducted a survey from December 2020 to May 2021 From time to time, snow leopard detection training was carried out in the eastern Animaqing area of the source of the Yellow River, and the monitoring capabilities of more than 60 herdsmen's wildlife protection personnel were improved through the training.

During this period, a survey of snow leopards and their associated species in an area of more than 2,000 square kilometers was carried out using infrared camera monitoring technology, which provided very important data for understanding the distribution of snow leopards and their associated species in the region.

Through the analysis of the survey data, the infrared camera has accumulated a total of 7621 days of capture, and obtained 2245 independent capture events of birds and beasts, of which the most species of carnivores were captured in the events, a total of 13 species, accounting for 68.4% of the total.

Five species of cats have been recorded, which are the first in the record. Among them, the snow leopard is a national class I key protected animal, and there are also lynx, leopard cat, desert cat, and rabbit hozen.

A total of 38 snow leopards were identified in the survey area.

"This is some of the results of our third phase of the monitoring activities of the flagship species snow leopard in the source area of the Yellow River. Through these three phases of investigation, we have a preliminary understanding of the distribution area of snow leopards and other large carnivores in the source area of the Yellow River. The protection and management of biodiversity in the source of the Yellow River provides important data basis. We also standardize and improve the monitoring capabilities of local people by training local herdsmen, forest rangers and environmental protection volunteers, which has played a powerful role in the concern and protection of wild animals Ngawang said that on the basis of these data analysis, we will carry out community-participated protection work, promote the harmonious coexistence of man and nature, and actively participate in the ecological protection of the source of the Yellow River and the construction of ecological civilization.
