The rape trial against the former director of the Greek National Theater, Dimitris Lignadis, began in a court in Athens on Thursday.

Four men accuse the 57-year-old prominent actor and director of having sexually assaulted or raped them.

Three of them are migrants who, according to their own statements, were still minors at the time of the crime.

At the start of the proceedings, Lignadis rejected all allegations.

The charges relate to a period of more than ten years, the most recent incident is said to have occurred in 2018.

The allegations only became public at the beginning of last year.

In February 2021, Lignadis resigned as artistic director of the National Theater in Athens and was arrested shortly afterwards.

Since then he has been in custody.

If convicted, he faces more than ten years in prison.
