The American specialist in connected objects for sport Fitbit on Wednesday requested the recall of around 1.7 million copies of its Ionic smartwatch, the model presenting “risk of burns” for users.

A million of these devices have been sold in the United States and 693,000 have been purchased abroad, indicates on its website the American agency in charge of the safety of consumer products (CPSC).

"The Ionic smartwatch's lithium-ion battery can overheat, posing a burn hazard," the agency said.

The recall process was conducted in coordination with Canadian and Mexican regulators.

The CPSC says it has heard of at least 115 cases of overheating of the watch in the United States, 78 of them reporting burns, including 2 third-degree burns and 4 second-degree burns.

A refund of 299 dollars

The regulator is urging users to stop wearing the smartwatch immediately and contact Fitbit to return the device for a $299 refund.

Fitbit will also offer owners of the watch a 40% discount code on selected items from the brand.

The Californian company stopped producing this model in 2020.

It was sold until last December in the United States in department store chains such as Best Buy, Kohl's or Target as well as on Amazon and on the Fitbit site.

A leader in smartwatches and fitness trackers, Fitbit was acquired by Google in 2019 for $2.1 billion.
