When

Sam Corlett

(Central Coast, 1995) sat down with his father to watch

Vikings,

he did not expect that at the age of 25 he would go to a lost cabin in the mountains for a week to prepare for his role as Leif Erikson or that he would be the protagonist of the continuation of the series,

Vikings: Valhalla

, which Netflix premieres this Friday.

But that is the reality of someone who has already become a star thanks

to The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

and now aspires to be

the successor Travis Fimmel as Viking king

.

"That's a nice compliment."

From Sabrina to Vikings, the change is important

Yes, it's very different because in Sabrina everything was lighter and I looked at rock stars like Jim Morrison to prepare me, with their hip movements and the way they walk.

With Leif it is all more intense, he comes out of the eyes and there is much more animal and primal nature that I wanted to welcome in myself, much more drama. Honor and family are central in this series.

Also in his life?My family is the world for me and I see myself identified there because he is trying to discover who he is in this tumultuous world.

I ask myself that question a lot: who am I and how can I fulfill my greatest purpose which is to tell stories through acting, writing and drawing? Have you found an answer to that question? I have become quite spiritual and meditate since very young because I traveled a lot as a child through the Buddhist monasteries of Southeast Asia.

The more I wonder, the more I get rid of the ideas of the actor and the artist and I am aware of who I am.

I love getting there because it is the only unifying thing that exists between all of us. Seeing the extermination of the Vikings in England that the series shows, has the world changed so little in so many years? Plato already said it.

You can look back 40 years or 1,000, that the way humans behave is still the same.

Certainties scare me, it's a deep fear, being so firm in an idea or belief.

I think that so many certainties and dogmatic belief systems have caused a lot of rupture in our society. Don't you have the feeling that it is the same thing that many immigrants who arrive in other countries are going through? Yes, of course, and I hope that this story helps give us an idea of compassion.

For something there is oxytocin,

which is like the hormone of love, to unite us.

Perceiving others as a danger and not being open to their way of being is very ingrained in the construction of our society. Leif and you seem to be the same person: spiritual, cerebral, pacifists... Yours goes back to what was passed as a child with his father Erik El Rojo, one of the most violent Vikings in history, that is why he turns his life around and does not want to be part of that violence.

And I think at that time that was difficult, I would probably want to be a blacksmith or something more creative instead of a warrior. When you are 25 years old and you know that you are seen by millions of people around the world, how do you deal with this?

Not thinking about it, doing your job.

But the other day I woke up and I had my face on a fence in front of my apartment, my brain doesn't register that as real,

and I don't know if I really want that.

I'm going to tell you a funny story, my dad is a carpenter and when I tell him I'm going to have a huge audition he tells me he's amazing, but he shows me the bookshelf he just made.

That puts me on the ground because my art is not more important than yours. Isn't it easy to lose your mind a little when these things happen to you?

Absolutely, but you have to understand that your job is to get to the set and try to nail the shot as best you can without thinking about what comes next.

Then you get there and you see all those townspeople who are on the set, each one with his art, who have worked for months and months to get there and to set up all this, that I come and say my lines.

Then the camera is turned off and everything goes to post production and editing.

viking,

Has it added pressure to this job? To be honest, it's more of an honor because it's continuing the legacy of what Michael Hirst and the original cast did, which was what I watched at home with my dad.

So it really is a gift to be able to be so inspired by the original, even if it is a more poetic version.

Our showrunner Jeb Stuart wants more pacing and more action sequences and that's where our little difference lies.

Although I suppose I also had moments of fear and nerves, but they slowly faded when I met this Irish team that welcomed me with open arms being me, they did not require me to be anyone from the previous stage. Did you get to speak with the actors of the original series for advice? Yes, Travis Fimmel messaged me, he was very nice.

He not so much he gave me advice as some tricks and words of encouragement.

I'm not going to say it, but there was even some swearing in that message.

And then Alexander Ludwig and Jordan Patr Smith did too. And what was that like for someone who says they're a fan of the original series? now also for me, she was the one who put us in contact.

It was really cool because he's also Australian and that helped us bond. There are already people saying he's going to be the new Travis Fimmel It's a different show with different people, but there are certain similarities of an accidental hero, a reluctant person who arrives to the heights of the Viking world. On his Instagram account, messages about mental health are continuous.

Is it important that those who have loudspeakers start releasing them more and more? It is a necessity in a very fast paced world like the one we live in.

Because we don't really allow ourselves to slow down and be with ourselves, that's getting to us.

I have been through my own journey of mental and emotional falls, I know what it is, and for this we need to value what it is to have a healthy mind.

How can we live otherwise?

Luckily, I see that this topic is rampant, there are many people expressing themselves, and oppressed trauma is being released right now.

It's going to keep happening and that's a release.

Hopefully the energy is directed towards taking the time we need to learn to take care of ourselves.

That is something that should be learned from a very early stage of our lives,

It would be nice if there were practices in our schools to help our children, to be more aware and compassionate of themselves and, therefore, of others. He is also a great defender of social and environmental causesYes, for me, it is no different giving advice to my sister or talking to my family.

It just so happens that my circle of influence has now become much wider because of my work.

I love directing that to causes that are important to me, the environment, mental health or social justice.

If I can help in any way to raise awareness, it is an honor and a gift to do so.

That is done by being an example to your friends and family, whether it's with my veganism, only buying sustainable clothes or trying to be as compassionate as possible as a human.

But yes,

I like to use my platform to generate more awareness about the things that matter. And the jump from model to actor, how has it been? The model was more like a couple of jobs when I finished school to have good money and be able to travel.

I was working in my father's carpentry shop, but I didn't like that very much so I made some modeling.

But I felt like an advertisement, being an actor requires much more than oneself.

You are drawing on all of your facets to serve a character and a story.

I feel more creatively excited when I get on a set as an actor.
