Sperm and egg rain.

“Nearly 600 men donated their sperm in 2021,” the Biomedicine Agency announced in a statement on Tuesday.

“This is the maximum recorded to date.

Women are not left out since 900 donated their oocytes – the scientifically exact term for human eggs – also a record for France.

The number of sperm donations is partly extrapolated because not all assisted reproduction centers have reported their figures.

The latter have been particularly encouraged for several months by the Biomedicine Agency to respond to a sharp increase in demand among women wishing to have children.

6,800 PMA requests for all in 2021

Indeed, the PMA has been extended since the end of September to all women, including those who are not married or live in a homosexual couple.

This extension, qualified as “PMA for all”, logically causes an influx of requests.

There were 6,800 last year among women affected by the extension of PMA for all, according to the Biomedicine Agency.

A few days earlier, the Minister of Health, Olivier Véran, had mentioned more than 7,000 requests, probably including requests made since the beginning of 2022.

In this context, the delays remain long to start an MAP.

It takes on average more than a year between the first request and the beginning of the process itself.

These delays explain why PMA for all is still very marginal: among unmarried women or women in same-sex couples, six attempts and only one pregnancy were in progress as of December 31.
