Covid: End of quarantines for close contacts with positives?
The Public Health Commission has agreed, as planned, to
eliminate the quarantine recommendation for all close contacts of a positive person regardless of their vaccination status
.
This measure will come into force from next Saturday, March 5.
In any case,
the Commission recommends extreme preventive measures aimed at protecting the most vulnerable
.
The Ministry of Health and the communities thus agree that during the 10 days after the last exposure, "close contacts of confirmed cases must take extreme precautions and reduce social interactions as much as possible by constantly wearing the mask and maintaining adequate hygiene. of hands. In particular, contact with vulnerable people should be avoided."
The identification of close contacts will only be carried out in areas considered vulnerable
with the aim of avoiding the transmission of the disease in them, such as nursing homes, day centers and centers with people with disabilities.
Close contacts in these settings will be instructed to perform an Active Infection Diagnostic Test (PDIA) at 3-5 days of follow-up.
The Commission
has adopted this decision in response to the high levels of immunity achieved
in the Spanish population against Covid, "both due to the high vaccination coverage and the large number of infections, the characteristics of the omicron variant currently circulating, and the greater performance of diagnostic tests. All of them have contributed to the change in the epidemiological characteristics and the behavior of the epidemic in the recent wave".
Thus, those responsible for Public Health understand that "this wave has been characterized by a very high incidence with a majority of cases with mild or asymptomatic symptoms, very high pressure on the primary care and public health systems and a percentage of hospital occupation and of ICU beds much lower than expected compared to what has occurred in the rest of the pandemic".
This change in the epidemiology of Covid favors, in the opinion of the Commission, "a transition from the current surveillance and control strategy to one focused on actions aimed at people and areas of greater vulnerability".
On the other hand, the Commission has also agreed to the indication of two pre-exposure prophylaxis drugs.
These are Ronapreve (casirivimab/imdevimab) and Evusheld (cilgavimab/tixagevimab).
The approved document establishes the candidates to receive these drugs in Spain and the scheme to be followed for their selection.
