• The Haut-Languedoc Regional Nature Park has asked the Ministry for Ecological Transition to overturn a decision authorizing the construction of nine wind turbines.

  • It is the planned location that embarrasses the managers of the Occitan park.

  • They would be harmful to the habitat of Bonelli's eagle, a rare and threatened raptor.

The Haut-Languedoc Regional Nature Park, supported by the National Federation of these protected areas, asked the Ministry for Ecological Transition to overturn a decision authorizing the construction of nine wind turbines in a sensitive area.

Straddling the departments of Tarn and Hérault, this park, which has 170 remarkable animal species, including rare birds of prey such as Bonelli's eagle, is not opposed, in principle, to wind turbines.

It even does “its part” in the development of renewable energies, with 215 wind turbines already in operation and 77 others authorized, hydroelectric dams or biomass projects, underlines, with AFP, its communication officer, Chloé Planès .

The location disturbs

But, in 2012, the park undertook to oversee the development of wind turbines when renewing its charter with, as a result, precise zoning to preserve the most fragile sites and a maximum number of 300 wind turbines.

However, two specialized companies, RES and Volkswind, have developed projects providing for the operation of nine new wind turbines in Dio-et-Valquières (Hérault).

It is the planned location that embarrasses the managers of the park, supported in particular by local elected officials, the League for the Protection of Birds (LPO) and by the National Federation of Regional Natural Parks of France.

Future wind turbines would, in fact, be located in an “exclusion zone” where they are prohibited, according to the charter of the Haut-Languedoc park.

They would be harmful to the habitat of the Bonelli's eagle, one of the most threatened raptors in France.

Projects approved by the courts

Despite the negative opinions of the park, justice validated the legal recourses of the two project leaders, which were formally authorized by a prefectural decree on December 17.

The management of the park has therefore introduced a “hierarchical appeal” to the Ministry of Ecological Transition, so that the authorization decision is “reassessed and reconsidered” in the light of the charter, specifies Chloé Planès.

“We call on the State and the Minister for Ecological Transition to do everything possible to guarantee the scope of the charters and the prestige of the classification of the Parks.

It is a message of clarity that is expected by the entire network of (58) parks”, indicates the president of the Federation of Regional Natural Parks of France, Michaël Weber.
