Alongside its weather forecasts and its work on global warming, Météo-France will strengthen its services in adapting to climate change, aiming to become the "reference" in France, said its CEO, Virginie Schwarz.

"We have just signed our new contract of objectives, with five axes, one of which is entirely dedicated to climate change and adaptation to climate change", she indicated during an interview.

The objective is to become "the reference source in France to help build adaptation strategies", she continued.

The meteorological establishment already participates in a program, Climsnow, which helps ski resorts adapt and invest according to snow forecasts, and helps cities such as Strasbourg, Lille and Paris to cool dense neighborhoods in case of heat wave.

A new tool every year

With this new objective and means contract (COM) 2022-2026, “we really want to intensify our actions in the field of adaptation”, indicates Virginie Schwarz.

“We have the ambition to make available at least one new climate service each year” during this period, she specifies.

ClimaDiag will be launched in the first semester.

It is “an awareness-raising tool to help companies become aware of their sensitivity to climate change and the areas in which they will need to act to adapt”, explains Virginie Schwarz.

It will be available via the Météo-France website.

At the end of the year, Météo-France will offer another service for municipalities, "and in particular small ones, which allows them to simply identify the main risks they face" in connection with climate change, says Virginie Schwarz.

Not all cities have the means to finance climate risk studies, argues the CEO of Météo-France.

At the same time, Météo-France will work on the water cycle, "one of the sectors that will be most impacted by climate change", with the aim of providing "much more precise information on the impact on rivers in particular, the flows, the evolution of the low water levels”.

Regarding meteorological vigilance, “we are going to move from 24-hour vigilance to two-day vigilance,” indicated Virginie Schwarz.

Météo-France also aims to "warn earlier in the event of extreme phenomena" to enable Civil Security to react better.

The objective is to anticipate them six hours in advance, against three hours currently.
