• As in many towns in France, humanitarian aid for Ukrainians is organized in Marseille.

  • The city took charge of the organization of the collection and indicates that it coordinates with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

  • The battalion of firefighters and the public hospital will also provide equipment

Here is a car parked in double line that no one will complain about, although parked in front of the gates of the town hall of Marseilles.

Sylvie gets out, a tent and two full shopping bags.

“There is a coat, a mattress, some medicines…” This Marseillaise came as soon as the opening, this Monday shortly after 2 p.m., of the center for collecting donations for Ukrainians who are suffering from the war.

“We have to react quickly, on our scale.

To help a little these people who are fighting for democracy”, formulates the one who “sought to find out, as of yesterday, on how she could give”.

Like Sylvie, Annie stopped in double file.

She came from La Ciotat, a nearby town, to carry some supplies.

The lively flow, she worries "of a conflict which could degenerate", but especially for the daughter of a Ukrainian friend, stranded in Kiev, from whom she still had news yesterday.

The city of Marseille, like many other communities, associations and individuals, set up this humanitarian aid collection point in a few hours.

Benoît Payan, the mayor of the city, twinned with that of Odessa, a port city in Ukraine, came to see “the solidarity of the Marseillais and the Marseillaises with the Ukrainian people.

I had the mayor of Odessa this morning, they need everything, they are resisting, they are courageous, they are fighting for their freedom, ”said the elected socialist, recounting with seriousness the fate of the inhabitants of this city, reduced to making Molotov cocktails in an attempt to defend themselves.

Departing ambulances and fire trucks

And if the Marseilles municipality coordinates these donations from individuals, it also organizes itself, "in a strategy with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs", to provide more substantial material aid.

The battalion of marine firefighters will thus be able to provide “civil security equipment, ambulances and trucks”, while the Marseille public hospitals will provide “first necessities drugs”.

For the time being, the town hall has not yet defined the method of delivery of this aid.

This will be done in consultation with the government, either “by airlift, by land or by sea”.

As donations are distributed in dedicated spaces by category, volunteers, such as Abdou Rahim, mobilized by the town hall, are busy helping to unload, packing supplies in boxes or directing donors.

Like this lady who takes from her shopping bag, filled with towels and other clothes, two yellow and blue wipes, in the colors of the Ukrainian flag, which she places with hygiene and cleaning products.
