At the ancient burial mound "Kaitenzan Kofun" in Marugame City, Kagawa Prefecture, which is designated as a national historic site, a stone casket that was discovered more than 70 years ago and then backfilled was dug up again to investigate the preservation state.27 It was opened to the public on the day.

The "Kaitenzan Kofun" in Marugame City is a front-rear burial mound with a total length of nearly 100 meters built in the middle of the 4th century. It turned out that three sarcophagus made by hollowing out were buried.

Consider future preservation and maintenance

All of the sarcophagus were backfilled after the investigation, but Marugame City dug out one of them again to check the preservation condition, and opened it to the public on the 27th.

The sarcophagus is about 2 meters and 70 centimeters in length, and Atsuko Nagao (85), who participated in the survey in 1950 at that time as a third-year junior high school student, also visited.

Mr. Nagao said, "I thought again that such a magnificent sarcophagus was buried. I remember the time when many people came to see the sarcophagus and so many people were crowded to open stores." I was talking.

According to Marugame City, there is no significant deterioration in the sarcophagus, so the city hopes to dig up and investigate the other two sarcophagus again and utilize it for the preservation and maintenance of the "Kaitenzan Kofun".
