A traditional flood control facility made by combining logs and stones was installed on the riverbed of the Kizu River, which flows through the southern part of Kyoto Prefecture.

This flood control equipment assembles logs in the shape of a triangular cone and fixes them to the riverbank with heavy stones.

It is called "Holy Cow" because its shape resembles a cow, and it is said that it was started by Shingen Takeda, a military commander during the Warring States period.

At the riverbed of the Kizu River in Seika Town, Kyoto Prefecture, the Kyoto University Disaster Prevention Research Institute and local residents set up four new holy cows, and on the 27th, about 40 people concerned attended to celebrate the completion.

The height and width of the holy cow is about 4 meters, and it is expected to have the effect of dispersing and weakening the momentum of water when the river rises due to heavy rain.

Toshiyuki Ota, director of the "Yamashiro Satoyama no Kai" who did the work, said, "I am relieved that I can finally complete it. I want to demonstrate that we can move the flow of the river by ourselves." ..

In addition, Associate Professor Yasuhiro Takemon of the Kyoto University Disaster Prevention Research Institute said, "By accumulating earth and sand while dispersing the flow of water, we can expect the effect of becoming a habitat for various creatures. I want to establish it. "
