A study reveals who is more likely to suffer from Covid and helps decide how to adapt treatment

Research awarded the first Michelson Philanthropies & Science Prize for Immunology and published in the journal

Science

reports on which people are most at risk for

COVID-19

, so doctors can tailor treatment.

Award-winning

scientist

Paul Bastard is hopeful that his findings on the impairment of specific immune mechanisms in those who have suffered most from

COVID-19

will pave the way for the adoption of precision medicine approaches for this disease and for infectious diseases in general.

The prize has been received for having shed light on the factors underlying these varied susceptibilities through an effort that began by cycling through the eerie and silent Parisian streets in the early days of the pandemic, to collect blood samples.

"The precision medicine approach would allow us to give the patient the most helpful treatment with the fewest side effects," explains Bastard, a researcher at the Imagine Institute (INSERM, University of Paris) in Paris (France) and at Rockefeller University in New York (New York).

It would also allow researchers to target particularly vulnerable patients, to help them avoid serious illness.
