At Akiyoshidai in Mine City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, which is known as one of the largest karst plateaus in Japan, the annual "Yamayaki" was held to announce the arrival of spring.

"Yamayaki" in Akiyoshidai is held every year at this time to burn off dead grass such as Japanese pampas grass and sardines and encourage new buds to emerge.

On the 26th, about 1000 people, including local fire brigades and residents, gathered to light the dead grass with a fireworks signal at 9:30 am.

The fire turned into a flame about 3 meters high and spread over a grassland of about 1100 hectares with a crackling sound.

The golden mountain surface turned black in about two hours, and visitors were watching the burning flames and taking pictures of the contrast with the white limestone.

Yamaguchi Prefecture had "priority measures such as prevention of spread" applied until the 20th of this month, so the burning of this year was carried out about a week later than usual.

A woman in her 50s who visited from the city said, "I brought her with me because I wanted to show her grandchildren the burning. It's amazing when the fire comes right in front of me."
