• A new tramway line, extending that of Aubagne, will connect five towns in eastern Marseille (La Bouilladisse, La Destrousse, Auriol, Roquevaire and Aubagne).

  • 15,000 daily passengers are expected on this tram along which 60,000 people live.

  • Arrived in Aubagne guard, users can then go to Aix and Marseille by train or coach.

The Aix-Marseille metropolis is continuing its mobility development program, accelerated by the billion euros of the Macron plan dedicated to this purpose.

After the announcement of the revision of the Marseille-Provence airport service 10 days ago, elected officials and services made this Thursday the tour of the future route of the tramway which will serve five municipalities in the east of Marseille (La Bouilladisse, La Destrousse, Auriol, Roquevaire and Aubagne).

Opening 2025

14.5 kilometers long, it will link from 2025 Aubagne to La Bouilladisse, in the Bouches-du-Rhône, using the old railway lines, abandoned in the 1980s and bought from the SNCF by the public authorities in 2017. "This old line and the twenty major works, bridges and tunnels, allows costs to be controlled", indicated Nathalie Castan, the head of the Infrastructure department.

Otherwise the bill, currently estimated at 125 million euros, would rather be around 500 million, which would make the project de facto impossible.

"The funding has arrived, and this allows us to finally launch the projects", rejoiced Martine Vassal, the president of the metropolis and the department, both co-financiers of the operation with the State and the Region.

In all, fifteen projects, spread over the entire territory, have been made possible by exceptional State funding.

Eleven stations and peaks at 60 km/h

For the municipalities crossed by this tramway, the expectation is high.

"For us, it's huge," said Yves Mesnard, the mayor of Roquevaire, one of the five municipalities served.

This small town of just 9,000 inhabitants is crossed every day by 22,000 cars.

“This should help unblock the city center,” he hopes.

The services aim to transport 15,000 passengers per day for this tramway along which 60,000 people live.

The journey time from La Bouilladisse to Aubagne station will be 25 minutes.

Users will then be able to reach the trains and coaches leaving for Marseille and Aix-en-Provence, the main urban centers providing employment in the region.

If the current Aubagne tramway is free, there is no guarantee that this new one will be free as well.

A call for tenders for the operation of the new line, which will have 11 stations between which the trains will run at more than 60 km/h, will be launched.
