Brexit is not just a social, business and bureaucratic problem.

In the case of Gibraltar and the Campo de Gibraltar region, it has an environmental aspect that seems to be on the way to a solution, at least for now.

Six thousand tons of waste, which was accumulated on the east side of the Rock and in the tunnels, will be transported across the border in trucks that will deposit it in the South of Europe environmental complex, located in the municipality of Los Barrios.

Until now, the Rock, thanks to an agreement with the Commonwealth of Municipalities of the Campo de Gibraltar, had been carrying out this task without major inconveniences.

All this within the framework of European Union relations.

However, the departure of the United Kingdom, and therefore the Rock, from the EU has complicated the scenario and since the new year began,

garbage was accumulating in the Rock and it was impossible to remove it across the border

.

In recent days, after the complaints raised by environmental groups such as Verdemar, or the Transfronterizo Group, which includes economic and social agents, the competent administrations have set to work to find a way out of what threatened lead to "an episode of environmental contamination for the entire bay," the activists point out.

Some voices have also been heard indicating that, while Gibraltar's future relationship is being negotiated - talks resume in Brussels on Tuesday - with Spain and the old continent "the current status quo would be maintained and there would be no problems for the transit of people and merchandise through the gate.

At least that is how María del Mar González, spokesperson for the Cross-Border Group, understands it.

The GBC, a public television channel, has confirmed that

garbage shredding machinery paid for by the United Kingdom as a contingency measure for Brexit has allowed Gibraltar to increase its capacity to store waste

.

However, the situation was already extreme and it seems that all administrations have agreed to avoid greater evils.

Sources from the Association of Municipalities of the Campo de Gibraltar have confirmed to El Mundo that "during these days the rubbish will arrive at the landfill", although obviously the problem could be repeated in the immediate future if there is no definitive solution pending completion of the talks in Brussels.
