“A French Navy frigate seized 271 kilograms of heroin from a fishing boat while patrolling international waters in the Gulf of Oman on February 17,” the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) announced in a statement.

This maritime alliance based in Bahrain brings together 34 countries including France and the United States.

The FMC, which bills itself as "the largest multinational naval partnership in the world", was created after a series of incidents in Gulf waters, attributed to Iran by the Americans and the Saudis.

They patrol some 8.3 million square kilometers of international waters in the Gulf, a major drug and arms trafficking route, where it combats criminal and terrorist activity.

Iran is regularly accused by Washington of carrying out illegal activities in and around Gulf waters, from attacks on foreign ships to arms trafficking.

In 2021, FMCs seized illegal drugs worth more than $193 million (€170.3 million) during counter-drug operations at sea, more than the previous four years combined, according to the US Navy.
