A man was shot dead during a police operation at his house in Central Franconia.

The 47-year-old man attacked police officers and firefighters in Gunzenhausen (Weissenburg-Gunzenhausen district) with a knife on Friday night, police said on Friday.

Pepper spray did not stop him, the officers then shot the man.

He died in the hospital that night.

Around midnight, a rioter in front of a residential building was reported to the police.

When the patrol arrived on site, the building was smoking, police said.

According to initial findings, the 47-year-old homeowner rioted in front of his own house.

He then first attacked the firefighters with a knife while they were extinguishing the fire and later also the police officers.

The emergency services were uninjured.

It was initially unclear why the man attacked the police and fire department with a knife.

There is a suspicion of a mental state of emergency, according to the police.

In 2020, according to the Bavarian Ministry of the Interior, police officers shot at people ten times in action.

One person was killed and one injured.

According to a ministry spokesman, there were also eleven warning shots, during which the officials deliberately only shot in the air.

Figures for the past year should not be available until March.
