Scientists deny that covid-19 vaccines increase the risk of HIV infection

Content is circulating that states that "different experts warned of the increased risk of HIV infection linked to some covid-19 vaccines."

A headline from a 2020 Forbes magazine article about this warning is also moved.

The contents refer to a letter published in the scientific journal 'The Lancet' of October 2020. In it, a group of researchers stated that experimental vaccines against HIV that used human adenovirus 5 (Ad5) as a vector had increased the risk of HIV infection in a subgroup of participants.

The researchers expressed concern about the possibility that those vaccines against covid-19 that used this vector could increase the risk of contracting HIV in populations with a high incidence of this infection.

One of the contents that circulated indicated, at first, that the Janssen vaccine contains the adenovirus 5 that the letter from 'The Lancet' warns about, but this is not the case: none of the vaccines in use in Spain use it as a vector .

Adenoviruses are a family of viruses that can cause the common cold and are used as vaccine vectors to deliver instructions to our cells.

AstraZeneca's Vaxzevria vaccine uses a chimpanzee adenovirus while Janssen's uses a human adenovirus 26 (Ad26).

What both achieve is to introduce into the body an adenovirus with modified DNA that is harmless and that, inside our cells, is converted into copies of RNA.

It is this RNA that contains the instructions for our cells to manufacture the S protein (spicule or Spike) that is the same as that of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.

As clarified in an article in the scientific journal 'Science', there is no evidence that any of these adenoviruses increase the risk of HIV infection.

In October 2020, a group of researchers sent a letter to The Lancet about vaccines that use a specific type of adenovirus, adenovirus 5 (Ad5), as a vector.

This letter is not a scientific article nor has it passed peer review.

Portugal lifts confinement for high-risk contacts

Portugal will eliminate confinement for high-risk contacts and limit quarantines to positive cases, the Portuguese Directorate General for Health (DGS) confirmed today.

High-risk contacts should have an antigen test, but if it is negative, they will not require isolation, although the tests should be repeated 3 to 5 days after exposure to a positive.

More than five million million children have lost a parent or caregiver to covid

At least 5.2 million children under the age of 18 have lost a parent or caregiver since March 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to a study model published this Thursday by "The Lancet".

The research, led by Imperial College London (United Kingdom) with mortality data from 20 countries, highlights that the group of adolescents between 10 and 17 years of age is the most affected, since up to 2.1 million lost a parent or caregiver for covid-19.

This type of orphanhood linked to the pandemic also affected almost 500,000 children between zero and four years old and 740,000 between five and nine, according to data updated by experts in July 2021.

The study establishes that the number of affected children almost doubled in the six months from May 1, 2021 to October 31 of that year, compared to the number recorded during the first 14 months of the pandemic (from the 1 of March 2020 through April 30, 2021).

Overall, the authors note, the research suggests that the death rate from COVID-19 "disproportionately" affected male parents or caregivers.

In this sense, three out of four children under the age of 18 who suffered orphanhood, around 75%, lost their father or caregiver.

In general, they point out, being orphaned by covid increases the risk of children suffering from poverty, sexual exploitation and abuse or violence, HIV infection, mental health challenges and serious distress, as well as, in some contexts, a propensity to become involved in gangs. youth and violent extremism.
