• 'Art in a can' A project for sustainability

Queen Letizia, the Minister of Culture, Miquel Iceta, the Minister of Culture of the Community of Madrid, Marta Rivera de la Cruz, the Mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, the Deputy Mayor Begoña Villacís and her Councilor for Culture, Andrea Levy, inaugurated this morning the 2022 session of the Madrid art fair, ARCO, with the usual guided tour of the pavilions of the Madrid fair, Ifema.

King Don Felipe, who suspended all acts on his public agenda due to the start of the fighting in Ukraine, was absent

at the last minute of the visit.

The Paseo de la Reina made a stop at the

stand

presented at ARCO by the newspaper EL MUNDO and its new cultural magazine,

La Lectura

.

The president of the Unidad Editorial group,

Marco Pompignoli

, its two corporate general directors and CEOs,

Stefania Bedogni and Nicola Speroni

, the director of EL MUNDO,

Francisco Rosell

and the director of

La Lectura

,

Maite Rico

, received Doña Letizia along with four of the artists who show their works in the project.

"The queen has been very interested in what this project has to denounce," explained, after the visit, the photographer Isabel Muñoz, National Photography Award in 2016. Muñoz, one of the 13 artists who occupy the Editorial Unit space .

An explanation: the 'stand' of EL MUNDO is this year a collective project developed by Real Conservera Española and focused on sustainability and the circular economy.

On the walls of the stand there are

misty, lonely, dreamlike, abstract, playful or ghostly seascapes

that draw attention to the fragility and vital value of the ocean.

The set, entitled

Arte en lata (9A26)

refers, more specifically, to the Galician Rías.

In addition to Muñoz,

José Manuel Ballester, Miquel Navarro, Bernardí Roig, Mar Solís, Karina Beltrán, Arturo Berned, Guillermo Fornes, Hugo Fontela, Julio Quaresma, Juan Garaizabal, Pierre D'Argyll, Bernardí Roig and Pepe Sanleón

have contributed four pieces each one of 50 by 50 centimeters, framed in boxes like the ones used to transport canned food from the estuaries.

Doña Letizia, with the representatives of the Administration and the Editorial Unit. ANTONIO HEREDIA

"I already worked at the Unidad Editorial

stand

in 2016 and it was a very important experience for me. It was not the same as showing your work in a gallery in order to sell.

That was like a research process

, it was an opportunity to do something completely different. And, somehow, it changed the way people saw me," Muñoz explained this morning.

Her photographs have been taken on a paper created with recycled mollusk shells that has been developed in the laboratory for the occasion.

At his side, the artist Pierre D'Argyll commented on the value of ARCO and of projects such as

Arte en lata (9A26)

, outside its commercial core, as "a tool that

enhances the visibility of Spanish artists in the world

".

"I have spoken to the mayor about that," explained Juan Garaizabal, another of the authors of the project present at its debut.

"I told him that years ago, you went to a dinner at the international art market, you said you came from Madrid and the name of Madrid meant nothing to anyone. Now, ARCO is a brand that everyone recognizes and that is very attractive everywhere.

That is thanks to an effort of many years

. I have asked the mayor that we all continue working to consolidate that success".

Editorial Unit has not been immune to this collective achievement.

Since the 1990 edition,

the third of ARCO and the first in which the newspaper EL MUNDO already existed

, the publishing group has had a stand at the fair.

Carmen Calvo, Miquel Navarro, José Manuel Ballester, Alberto Corazón and Francisco Leiro have been some of the artists who have expressed EL MUNDO's commitment to culture in previous years.

"With their presence at Arco, EL MUNDO and

La Lectura

consolidate their commitment to the universe of culture, a commitment endorsed in this edition by an artistic project framed in sustainability, key to the future of new generations", explained Stefania Bedogni , Corporate General Director and Managing Director of Unidad Editorial.

This year, for the first time, the project is collective and has a message that

goes beyond the celebration of art and culture

.

His legacy will be a set of works that can be seen in various parts of Spain in the coming months.
