They suffer each time the malfunctions of treatment plants, the proliferation of phytoplankton and the ravages of green algae.

This Thursday, around 150 fishermen and shellfish farmers demonstrated in the streets of Morlaix (Finistère) to denounce the deterioration of water quality in the culture basins of Brittany.

On a banner, a message summarizes their distress: “We are on the edge of shit”.

A way for the profession to denounce the lack of investment by communities to bring their sanitation network up to standard.

Provoking de facto spills of dirty water in the seaside, where grow oysters or mussels.

Shellfish very vulnerable to pollution

Some shellfish farmers symbolically blocked the port locks for about an hour using barges, also lighting smoke bombs.

“For around thirty years, we have seen that the quality of the water on the coast has been deteriorating”, assures Goulven Brest, president of the Regional Committee for Shellfish Culture North Brittany (CRCBN) at the origin of the gathering.

“As much as we have restored the situation at the level of the rivers, as much on the coast, we have done nothing”, regrets the president.

“We cannot continue to work in these conditions,” he warns, regretting the regular administrative closure of fishing areas due to poor water quality.

Shellfish are filter-feeding organisms that are particularly vulnerable to water pollution.

The CRCBN calls in particular for a "provisional suspension of building permit authorizations", the "treatment" of "identified and well-known black spots" or even the establishment of bacteriological and microbiological standards on all discharges upstream of sensitive areas.

Last year, the prefect of Côtes d'Armor took the decision to freeze building permits in 18 of the 57 municipalities of the Guingamp-Paimpol agglomeration because of the obsolescence of the wastewater treatment networks.

During heavy rains, sewage treatment plants regularly overflow, causing serious pollution.
