In some images, the heat of the volcano contrasts with the snow of the surrounding mountains, offering a striking spectacle.
The lava flows extended over more than 10 kilometers, according to the Civil Protection of Sicily.
Catania, located about thirty kilometers from the volcano, was even affected.
Ashes and volcanic stones fell in the streets of this city of 700,000 inhabitants, reports France Info.
