Those we need to find

by Joan He, published on January 21, 2022 by Éditions Lumen.

His favorite quote:

Here I am as wide as an ocean, here I am, the only sea I will ever have to cross, and for the first time in ages I remember what it feels like to drown in yourself.

Why this book?

  • Because

    Those we need to find

    is a dystopia

    – flirting with the thriller – audacious and full of surprises and which knows how to stand out thanks to a plot that is increasingly original and complex over the pages.

The chapters alternate between the points of view of two diametrically opposed sisters whom life has separated.

Their only common point: the love they have for each other and their desire to be reunited again.

  • Because the first of the two sisters, Cee, has been surviving on a desert island

for three years with only a small robot with a very limited language for company.

Between loneliness, partial amnesia, sleepwalking spells putting her in great danger and achromatopsia, life is complicated but she does everything she can to achieve her only goal for all her years: to manage to go beyond the horizon to find her little sister, Kay.

  • Because Kay, the youngest, lives in one of the 8

floating ecocities around the world bringing together 25% of a privileged population spread over different strata.

Kay lives with her father in stratum-99 and also suffers from loneliness despite being surrounded constantly.

Since the death of her mother, her father has locked himself in work and she herself feels terribly different from the others with her emotions which seem inappropriate to her and her extraordinary intelligence.

  • Because in an apocalyptic context where

climatic outbursts cause millions of deaths (especially outside the more protected strata…) and where the inhabitants of ecocities live more in holographic than human form, the chilling revelations will follow.

This complex novel is therefore based on the life of two sisters but also goes far beyond and carries reflections on ecology, political manipulation, inequalities in society, the power of technology or even abandonment.

  • Because

    Those we need to find

is a real page turner, halfway between

    Black Mirror

    and

    Lost

, which will undoubtedly be able to take you on a boat.

In this novel carried by a pen that goes straight to the point, the plot continues to become more complex to further thicken the mystery around the sisters, the twists and turns are painfully unexpected and the end is simply masterful.

In short, a breathtaking read that is full of mysteries, to read urgently.

pleasure by Anne-So Echos de Mots, blogger specializing in children's and teenage literature.

“For me, reading can be as much a personal pleasure in which one runs to take refuge as an excuse to discuss and meet other readers.

I am a lover of words always interested in new discoveries.
