Officials at the Château de Compiègne (Oise) are to return a wax statuette belonging to the Jewish lawyer Armand Dorville stolen by the Nazis during the Second World War.

They act within the framework of a law adopted on February 15, 2022 allowing derogation from the principle of inalienability of public collections, explains France 3 Hauts-de-France

A collection of 450 paintings belonging to Armand Dorville had been sold by his family in 1942, after the lawyer's death.

The General Commission for Jewish Affairs had seized part of the proceeds of the sale, which had not been returned until 1944 to the heirs who survived the deportation.

Despoliation recognition

The Commission for the compensation of victims of spoliation therefore compensates the family today to the tune of 350,000 euros.

The Dorvilles also demand recognition of the spoliation from the French State and want the 1942 sale to be annulled. The court will rule on March 22.
