• The Audition Solidarité association criss-crosses France to encourage young musicians to take care of their ears.

  • Indeed, the sound intensity of a musical instrument approaches that of a mower!

A passion that can unfortunately cause damage.

This Monday afternoon, some middle school students in music classes (CHAM) in Nantes did not believe their ears when they learned of the risks they ran from exposing themselves to a sound, too loud or too long. .

Gathered at the conservatory, the teenagers followed for an hour a curious session of "hearing prevention", proposed by the association Hearing solidarity.

“The future of your ears is played out now, until you are 20 years old, explains Jean-Yves Paquelet, who has been traveling across France for 12 years to raise awareness among young musicians.

But the problem with them is that you don't realize when they are tired.

Rather than moralizing speeches, the former music teacher prefers demonstration by example.

“Who has ever experienced hissing or buzzing?

As always, about 80% of the assembly raised their finger... Armed with his sound level meter, he continued his presentation by asking a few students to play a note on the trombone, violin or flute.

Result: the screen displays up to 90 dB (or even 105 if you blow hard into someone's ears with a paper clip) a threshold already considered dangerous.

“In terms of sound volume, a flute or a mower, it's the same!

But the music is pleasant, so we realize it less, says the trainer.

Be careful, I'm not saying that you shouldn't practice, I'm just saying that you have to dose well, and if possible protect yourself.

“Auditing has always been taboo in an orchestra”

The challenge is that the thousands of microscopic eyelashes contained in the cochlea, this organ as big as a pea located in the inner ear, behind the eardrum, remain as intact as possible.

They must be preserved in particular from high-pitched sounds because “once destroyed, it is not possible to repair them”.

In concert, moving four or even eight meters away from a loudspeaker, or wearing earplugs, is for example recommended.

On a daily basis, it is recommended to take breaks, while some young people put on their headphones directly after their music lesson... "It's better to use headphones, to put on your ears, suggests the former.

Here again, the volume is to be monitored.

If you put it all the way, the ears will be tired after 15 minutes.

If the subject is surprisingly not one of the themes systematically addressed in conservatories, Jean-Yves Paquelet believes that awareness has nevertheless begun.

"But among the oldest, hearing has always been taboo in an orchestra, the musicians do not talk about their problems for fear of losing a certain credibility", considers this saxophonist.

It must be said that the technical constraints, such as the size of the rooms, also make the fight difficult to lead.

But for some students, the message has become quite audible.

“My mother had bought me plugs specially designed for musicians, says a young girl, at the end of the session.

I thought it was pointless, but maybe I'll change my mind.
