A month after the rampage at the University of Heidelberg, students remembered the victims at a funeral procession through the city.

With the march through three university locations in the city on the Neckar, they commemorated the shot 23-year-old student of life sciences and her three injured fellow students.

"The march is a sign of solidarity and mutual support," said Michèle Pfister, co-chair of the student body, on Monday.

According to the police, around 300 young people walked down the main street with candles in the direction of the scientific campus in Neuenheimer Feld, which is just outside.

The student body had expected 800 to 1200 participants with candles and lights, in the end there were significantly fewer people in bad weather.

The parade ended with a speech in front of the building in Neuenheimer Feld, where an 18-year-old student had fired his rifle several times in the middle of a tutorial with 30 participants.

The 23-year-old woman from the Palatinate died of her injury a few hours later in the hospital after being shot in the head.

The gunman shot himself after leaving the building.

His motives are still unclear.

The young woman who was shot had just started her studies in life sciences when her life was taken abruptly.

The gunman was also registered in this subject, but according to the investigators, he knew neither the dead nor the three injured.

The rector of the university, Bernhard Eitel, had previously spoken of the great cohesion of the academic community across all subject boundaries.

"Despite all the sadness and compassion, I welcome this initiative by the students and especially the biology student council as a sign of solidarity and hope, for which we are grateful."
