According to information from the broadcaster ORF, three people died when a car fell into the Salzach in Austria.

The ORF quoted the emergency services as saying that the victims were two adults and a two-year-old child.

The car smashed through a railing and fell into the river on the German-Austrian border near Oberndorf on Sunday evening for reasons that have not yet been clarified.

The child was rescued, but attempts at resuscitation were unsuccessful.

According to helpers, all three occupants should have been dead when rescue workers arrived.

"They were in the water for about an hour," said a helper to ORF.

The police were initially unable to provide any precise information about what happened.
