From comfy track pants to summer dresses, most of her wardrobe is made by herself in her London apartment, Leah Baker has become one of a group of young amateur seamstresses who criticize the fashion community for its environmental damage.

“I wanted to become independent from ready-to-wear,” says Leah Baker, a 29-year-old neuroscience doctoral student.

Her rejection of "fast fashion", which includes cheap clothes that is quickly thrown away, was her starting point in the clothing industry.

Four years later, about 80% of the clothes in her closet are hand-made, from pajamas to long woolen coats, to jeans made from denim scraps she collected from her family.

The fashion and textile industry is the third most polluting sector in the world after food and construction.
