(Hundreds of United Front Workers in Sichuan said United Front Affairs) Xie Huiqi, Vice Chairman of Chengdu Municipal Committee of Jiu San Society: Dedicating youth to improving the scientific research level of regenerative medicine in China

China News Service, Chengdu, February 19 (Reporter He Xi, Xu Yangyi) "I hope there will be more new regenerative medicine repair materials and repair products with independent intellectual property rights, which can benefit patients to the greatest extent." Jiusan Society Xie Huiqi, vice chairman of the Chengdu Municipal Committee and director of the Stem Cell and Tissue Engineering Laboratory of the State Key Laboratory of Biotherapy, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, said in an exclusive interview with Chinanews.com that there are currently few repair materials and repair products available in clinical medicine in my country. And most of them rely on imports. "Therefore, it is urgent to solve this 'neck stuck' problem through independent innovation, which is also the most important driving force for us to do research well."

Xie Huiqi, born in 1974, is the first female doctor of orthopedic surgery in West China Clinical Medical College of Sichuan University.

After graduating with a doctorate in 2001, she did not become an excellent microsurgery or trauma orthopedic surgeon as everyone expected, but chose to leave the clinic and join the front line of scientific research, in the field of basic research on tissue repair and regeneration, for China. Ordinary people can use cheap and high-quality domestic repair materials to silently dedicate their youth.

Talking about the reasons for making this decision, Xie Huiqi recalled that her teacher, Professor Yang Zhiming, once asked herself: "How many operations can a lifetime surgeon perform and how many patients can I save?" Under the guidance of her teacher, Xie Huiqi understood " Through scientific research, some new technologies, new treatments, and new materials can be created and provided to the majority of doctors to use, which can relieve the pain of more patients, and the value created is no less than being an excellent doctor.”

Xie Huiqi's scientific research journey started from a small partition of about 6 square meters at the corner of the stairs of the hospital's scientific research building: buying a small experimental straw, reporting the research progress for the first time, and applying for a project independently for the first time... Gradually The area of the laboratory has changed from small to large, the scientific research team has grown continuously, and the research field has also expanded from bone, tendon, cartilage, etc. to more tissues and even the regeneration and repair of organs.

According to incomplete statistics, more than 100 million diseases need to be treated by regenerative medicine in China every year, and the trend is still increasing year by year. Restoration materials, of which more than 80% are imported, are very expensive.

"For example, a repair film for oral cavity costs 4,000 to 5,000 yuan for a small piece, and tens of thousands of yuan for dura mater materials." Xie Huiqi said.

The birth of tendon repair material (BIO tendon) is the most unforgettable piece in Xie Huiqi's work.

Xie Huiqi told reporters that from 1986 to 2016, the research and development of Biootendon went through multiple stages such as basic research, process research, quality system research, and clinical research, of which the basic research lasted for 20 years and the clinical research lasted for 6 years.

Xie Huiqi said with emotion, "It took 30 years to develop and transform this product. I'm glad we persevered!"

After years of hard work, Huiqi Xie's research team has successively applied for more than 40 national invention patents and 3 international invention patents.

With the support of West China Hospital of Sichuan University, many patents have been well transformed and applied in clinical practice to benefit patients.

Xie Huiqi's spirit of serving the country and the people with science and technology has been inherited from the older generation of Jiusan Society members.

In 2004, under the influence of He Sheng, chairman of the West China Branch of the Jiusan Society and a famous professor of hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery at the West China Hospital of Sichuan University, Xie Huiqi joined the Jiusan Society with the yearning and pursuit of "patriotism, democracy, and science".

Since then, she has followed the example of Deng Jiaxian, Wang Ganchang, Wang Xuan and other nine-three sages. While doing a good job in scientific research and promoting the national scientific and technological innovation and reform, she also pays attention to social hotspots, actively participates in the deliberation of politics, and offers advice and suggestions.

During her tenure as a member of the Chengdu CPPCC and a deputy to the National People's Congress, Xie Huiqi performed her duties conscientiously.

In addition to the field of scientific and technological innovation, he also pays attention to urban construction, social and people's livelihood and other issues, and writes many proposals, motions and suggestions every year.

Among them, "On Promoting Independent Innovation of Regenerative Medicine Biotechnology and Drugs in my country" was submitted to the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference by the Central Committee of Jiusan Society and became a key proposal.

In response to the current situation and existing problems of Chengdu's introduction of overseas high-end talents, she proposed that "it is recommended that the municipal government establish an overseas high-level talent committee to give full play to the positive role of high-end talents in the construction of Chengdu's innovative city." The title of "Advanced Individual for Participation in Politics and Deliberation".

Talking about the future, Xie Huiqi said that she will continue to focus on scientific research and undertake more social responsibilities while doing her job well.

"As an intellectual, I should do my part for the country and the society. This is our responsibility." She hopes that through the efforts of herself and her colleagues, our country will be able to make progress in the field of regenerative medicine, especially stem cells and tissue engineering. The field of research continues to be at the forefront of the world.
