More than a thousand people took part in a white march in Saint-Laurent-de-la-Salanque on Sunday to pay tribute to the victims of the fire which devastated three buildings in this town near Perpignan on February 14.

Before the start of the march, Mayor Alain Got underlined “the enormous surge of solidarity in the town”, after the fire and the explosion which caused the death of eight people.

“There is a lot of sadness”, according to Isabelle Badie, in her sixties, who did not know the victims but wished to participate in the march “out of solidarity”.

Sonia Sarrahi, 50, whose daughter knew one of the victims, said she “understands the pain of the families”.

She wanted to come from Perpignan, where she currently lives, after growing up in Saint-Laurent-de-la-Salanque.

As for Claude Bouquet, aged over 70, she also underlines that “there is a lot of solidarity in the village”.

All tracks studied

On Saturday, the prosecution had indicated that the bodies of the eight dead people had been identified and would be returned to their families.

Regarding the causes of the tragedy, "all leads remain under study, criminal or accidental", had also specified the prosecutor of Perpignan, Jean-David Cavaillé.

During the night from Sunday to Monday February 14, eight people, including a baby and a two-year-old child, died in the fire of three adjoining buildings in this town of 10,000 inhabitants, located about twenty kilometers from Perpignan. .

Of the eight people who died, five belonged to the same family.

They are the baby, the two-year-old, their parents and their grandfather.

Among the three other dead, there is a couple.
