The incident ferry, belonging to the Italian Grimaldi Group, was bound for Brindisi, Italy from the port of Igoumenitsa in western Greece. The fire broke out when it sailed to the Ionian waters near the Greek island of Corfu in the early morning of the 18th.
The ferry was engulfed in flames and a large amount of smoke. After the fire broke out, nearby ships and the Greek coastguard rushed to the scene for rescue.
