La Reaper: the death

knell by Neal Shusterman, published on February 17, 2022 by Éditions Pocket Jeunesse.

His favorite quote:

The Reaper's Commandments: Thou shalt kill.

You will kill without any bias, without bigotry and without premeditation.

You will grant one year of immunity to the family of those who accepted your coming.

You will kill the family of those who resisted you.

Why this book?

  • Because the third and final volume of the Grim Reaper trilogy

    has

    finally been

    released!

This is therefore an opportunity to return here to this very rich young adult dystopia.

Humanity has overcome death, famine and disease thanks to an artificial intelligence to which men have decided to leave power: the Thunderhead.

The latter, all-powerful, impartial and fair, however, has no right to interfere with the community of Reapers.

  • Because death being eradicated, it was necessary

to do something to limit the demography.

The reapers therefore have the mission and honor of administering death.

Its members, untouchable and supposedly irreproachable, have quotas to keep and it is for this reason that Master Faraday has taken on two young apprentices: Rowan and Citra.

These two, at first rivals, will very quickly develop a strong relationship which will continue to become more complex as the trilogy unfolds.

  • Because our two heroes will very quickly come up against the limits

of their society and will have to fight against those who want to prevent them from doing what is right.

The notion of morality is also very important in this series and if the reason that led to the creation of the Reaper community is fair and logical, and if the rules are well defined, we understand that things cannot turn out well when the man defies the laws of nature…especially when humanity is so far from incorruptible.

  • Because, from the second volume, we no longer

only accompany Rowan and Citra but we also enter into the thoughts of artificial intelligence.

These short passages are as terrifying as they are fascinating and provide food for thought on the evolution of technology and the power of artificial intelligence (as well as its limits).

The corruption of the elites, death, betrayal and love are other themes present in this dark and surprising trilogy.

  • Because the

    Grim Reaper

    trilogy is a real must-read

    for all dystopia lovers.

Once again, Neal Shusterman stands out as an author with a fertile imagination and undeniable talent, creator of punchy and heartbreaking novels.

Carried by strong heroes, powerful themes and an irreproachable pen, this series, in the process of being adapted to the cinema by Universal Studios, is a young adult gem that you absolutely must read!
