The 28-year-old Alina Pash won in Ukraine's equivalent of the Melodifestivalen on Saturday and would go to Italy in May.

She tells the BBC that she has been waiting for over eight years to represent Ukraine at Europe's biggest music festival, but now it seems that her dream is in danger of being shattered.

Ukraine's public service UA: PBC has launched a preliminary investigation into the singer's visit to the Crimean peninsula in 2015 and has chosen to postpone the decision on whether she can really compete until later.

Not the first time

The crime issue has long been controversial in Ukraine and this is not the first time artists have been banned from Eurovision after visiting the Crimean peninsula.

In 2017, Russia's representative Julia Samoilova was not allowed to participate in the singing competition in Kiev after she performed at a concert in the Crimea.
