• This Wednesday marks the easing of a number of health restrictions.

  • In Paca, as in France, the epidemic is ebbing, both in hospitals and in terms of infections, which however remain at a very high level.

  • The only black spot: the number of hospital deaths due to Covid-19 remains on the rise.

After the successive outbreaks linked to the Delta then Omicron variants, the coronavirus epidemic in Marseille and Paca is now experiencing a slow decline.

“Most of the viral circulation indicators are again down sharply, even if they still remain at a high level”, notes the regional health agency despite “the number of hospital deaths still on the rise”.

This last point remains to be interpreted with regard to the time lag between deaths and epidemiological dynamics.

A prospect that is sufficiently encouraging for the government, which has decided to ease certain health restrictions, by authorizing the reopening of nightclubs, for example.

The opportunity to take stock of the epidemic.

A sharply falling incidence rate after familiarity with the peaks

With an incidence rate of 4,003.1 cases per 100,000 inhabitants reached on January 24, the intensity of the epidemic circulation had set a frightening record.

Since then, it has fallen steadily to 1,239, according to ARS data as of February 15.

For once, the incidence rate in Paca is slightly lower than the national average (1,320) A loss of nearly 1,000 points in one week.

It should be noted that all the departments in the region are still above the 1,000 mark.

A still degraded situation in hospitals

The average occupancy rate of intensive care beds (88%) remains very high in the region, with strong disparities.

The Alpes-de-Haute-Provence have an occupancy rate of 50%, where the Vaucluse is at 100%, the Var at 90.7% and the Bouches-du-Rhône at 89.6%.

According to data from the AP-HM on Tuesday, the average age of patients with Covid-19 and in intensive care in Marseille public hospitals is 61 years old.

Deaths continue to rise

Since the start of the crisis, 11,257 people have died of Covid-19 in hospitals in the region, including 247 over the past week.

It is the Bouches-du-Rhône who have paid and continue to pay the heaviest price, with almost half of the hospital deaths in the region, including 113 this week.

More than 3,000 patients are still hospitalized, including 1,522 for serious forms and following them.

Leveling off vaccination coverage

Of the five million inhabitants who populate the PACA region, 3.7 million (75%) of them have a complete vaccination schedule.

A rate two points lower than the national average, which suggests that the region has gradually overcome its original reluctance.

A figure which, logically, no longer really seems to be progressing and having reached its glass ceiling.

About 10% of nursing home residents have died from Covid-19

Finally, among the figures provided by the ARS, it should be noted that around 2,209 residents of nursing homes in the region have died of Covid-19 since the start of the epidemic.

The region has 24,208 places in these establishments.
