The wait has been long, but fans of Captain Kirk and Doctor Spock are finally satisfied.

A fourth installment of

Star Trek

starring Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto is in the works.

JJ Abrams, who directed

2009's Star

Trek and 2013's

Star Trek Into Darkness

, confirmed the good news at Paramount's Investor Day.

"We're thrilled to announce that we're hard at work on a new

Star Trek

movie to be shot by the end of the year that will feature our original cast and some new characters that I think will be really fun, exciting and will help take

Star Trek

to places you've never seen before,” he said, according to

Empire

.

A question

Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, and Simon Pegg will return to the Enterprise.

JJ Abrams will produce the project through his company Bad Robot, and

WandaVision

director Matt Shakman will helm the film, which is scripted by Josh Friedman and Cameron Squires based on an earlier project by Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet.

The only unknown is the fate of Chekov's character.

The role was held by Anton Yelchin, who tragically died in 2016. The 27-year-old actor was accidentally crushed against the barrier of his Hollywood property by his own vehicle, a Jeep Grand Cherokee, when he had just left it.
