Brain surgery may end the suffering of drug addicts

A new surgery invented by doctors in their efforts to rid drug addicts from their addiction, and this surgery that takes place in the brain is expected to be a decisive way to end the suffering of addicts.

And the Asharq Al-Awsat website reported, quoting CNN, that this surgical procedure will play an effective role in deep stimulation of the brain, which helps to resist drug addiction, and doctors have so far tested this new technique on 4 people.

During the operation, doctors give the patient a local anesthetic, then a hole is drilled in the skull before inserting electrodes through a thin piece of wire not more than one millimeter wide.

The patient then lies awake, so that the doctors show him pictures of piles of drugs, and other pictures that aim to provoke cravings to take them, while the doctors adjust the place of the electrodes, based on the reactions of the patient’s brain, to reach the areas responsible for cravings for drugs and the effect She has to control and erase this desire.

The scientists confirmed that this new technique also stimulates the frontal cortex area of the brain, which is a vital area for thinking and decision-making, which is often damaged by heavy drug use.

They explained that the technique proved effective on two of the four patients who were included in the experiment who quit addiction two and a half years ago, while the third patient relapsed and returned to addiction and the electrodes were removed from his brain.

Scientists are still testing how well the technique works on the fourth patient, saying it's too early to know if it actually helped him quit addiction.
