A huge scanner x-raying trucks to detect the possible presence of drugs or cash in their cargo has been installed on the A9.
The device is on a rest area located at the level of Perthus (Pyrénées-Orientales), on the border between France and Spain, specifies France 3 Occitanie.
The site is a few kilometers from the Boulou toll gate, (Pyrénées-Orientales).
This road axis is used by many trucks coming from North Africa and going to Europe.
The route is often chosen by drug traffickers to transport narcotics.
14 tons of these products were seized in the Pyrénées-Orientales last year.
The activity would have increased by 30% in one year.
High precision
To fight against the phenomenon, the scanner helps customs officers to check any cargo that seems suspicious to them without having to enter the trailer of the truck.
In particular, the machine reveals defects of homogeneity in the mass of goods.
Its precision allows it to detect elements the size of a lemon, said the head of the Perthus brigade.
