According to the latest data from the National Institute of Statistics,

63% of the Spanish population over 15 years of age uses glasses or contact lenses on a daily basis

to correct their vision.

But in today's article I am not going to talk about glasses, we are going to focus on

contact lenses since they require special care

in their handling to prevent their use from becoming a problem for our visual health.

It is estimated that

more than three million Spaniards

use them daily.

If you are also one of them, this article is of interest to you, as it will prevent you from making any of the six main mistakes.

1. Lack of proper hygiene

All contact lenses, soft and hard, need daily care and maintenance.

The only ones that are spared, for obvious reasons, are those of a single day since at the end of the day they go directly to the trash.

We must change the liquid in the contact lenses every day

, since it loses its disinfectant and preservative properties and this puts our eye health at risk, and we must never replace it with tap water or saliva since the microorganisms will pass directly to the lenses and from there to the eye

If one day we have run out of fluid, we can occasionally replace it with artificial tears.

Oh, and before handling contact lenses

we should always wash our hands with soap and water

.

2. Misuse of the contact lens case

We should not only pay attention to contact lenses, but also to the case where we keep them.

From time to time we must change it for a new one, and daily we have to leave it free of liquid

and air dry before using it again.

If we don't do it this way, we run the risk that it ends up becoming a space full of bacteria and viruses that can lead to an eye infection.

3. Sleep with your contact lenses on

If you wear contact lenses frequently, surely on some occasion you have accidentally fallen asleep with them on and

when you woke up you noticed your eyes were dry, itchy and reddened due to the lack of oxygenation of the cornea

.

If this has happened to you, do not remove them directly upon waking up as the risk of corneal erosion occurring is high,

put several artificial tears on the eyes

and remove the lenses after a few minutes.

And, for the sake of your eyes, try not to let this happen to you again.

4. Extend the life of the lenses

Contact lenses expire, yes, just like food, but we don't always give adequate importance to this aspect and many people extend their use beyond what is established by the manufacturer.

The materials they are made of lose certain properties with use

, and this can cause eye irritation, itching or even an infection in the worst cases.

5. Swim with them on

When we shower or when we go to the sea or the pool it is not advisable to wear contact lenses.

The reason is that we will be more vulnerable to an eye infection

due to the bacteria present in the water and because the lens can be affected by a particle of soap.

We can always

opt for prescription diving goggles or single-use contact lenses.

6. Be careful with makeup

If we are going to put on makeup, we must be careful to always put on our contact lenses before starting.

And when it's time to remove your makeup,

we'll remove your contact lenses before you start.

Everything to avoid dragging makeup products into the eye.
