A group of meditators have been caught by tidal waves on a beach in Indonesia and swept into the sea.

At least ten people drowned in the accident, and a 40-year-old man was missing, police in East Java province said on Sunday.

Twelve people were rescued.

According to local police chief Hery Purnomo, the 23-strong group sat on the beach on Sunday night and meditated together.

"They were too close to the sea and couldn't save themselves when the tidal waves came and swept them away," Purnomo told TV One.

The meditation session was led by a guru who survived the accident.

The guru is now being questioned, said Purnomo.

According to media reports, all of the victims came from nearby villages.

Some of them were therefore related to each other.

The region's military commander, Batara Pangaribuan, said the beach is usually monitored and closed at night.

But the people had apparently found a way directly to the sea.

The authorities had recently warned visitors not to go into the water at Payangan Beach because of fears of high waves.

High waves are common on many beaches in Indonesia.

Deadly accidents at sea keep happening in the country.
