You have to love the

Goya Awards

.

So, no more.

And you have to love them as much for what they have always wanted to be as, even more, for what they may never be.

«You are ugly, but I love you, fist!»

, said the dwarf Ujo de Nazarín to his beloved in perhaps the starkest declaration of love that has been seen on screen.

Few editions of the Spanish film awards have raised as much expectation (and this phrase, in truth, does not matter a bit the year it is used) as the one that makes number 36 and is celebrated today at the Palau de les Arts in Valencia in the one that will act from Joaquín Sabina, who returns, to C. Tangana, who will not leave, through Luz Casal, Bebe, Pantomime Full... Even Pedro Sánchez and Yolanda Díaz, who will not sing, but almost.

By the way, all political parties have been invited, but...

There are many incentives.

On the one hand, we have the film with the nomination record in the entire history of nomination records.

The good boss

has been capable of being completely ignored at the last edition of the San Sebastian Festival and monopolizing, perhaps in compensation, all the attention of the academics.

And it is not so much about a contradiction as about that strange sense of justice that is so much ours (they will know, the juries!).

But that's not the thing.

The possibility of seeing together those who are already together turned into the actress and the actor with (both together and separately) more Goya leaves few options for the disaffected.

Penélope Cruz

and

Javier Bardem

are candidates for the Oscars, yes, but first, let it be clear, they are Spanish.

And a lot of Spaniards.

It could be added, for lovers of disproportionate numerology, which is also a mark, the greatest of all, that

Alberto Iglesias

(another of the candidates for Hollywood) is one step away from his twelfth Goya.

Nobody has more.

There are more reasons for enthusiasm, but this is enough.

And then there is the other.

Like the hyena of the joke, it is difficult to understand so much laughter in a scenario that someone could describe as devastating.

The other emptied Spain, that of the movie theaters, continues its advance.

The year that is awarded, 2021, was simply a prize.

the 40 million

completed at the box office by Spanish cinema were two less than what was supposedly achieved in the worst year imaginable, that of the running of the bulls and the applause for the toilets;

Netflix's in vein.

If at the end of 2020 there was talk, despite everything and as the only possible consolation, of a cinema screen share from here compared to that from outside of almost 25%, in December of last year it was around 16% (of each 100 who went to the cinema, 16 opted for Spanish cinema).

Otherwise, the poor increase in viewers did not affect the Spanish production.

More has gone to the cinema (it has gone from 28 million admissions to 40), but this increase has not been, by far, proportional.

There will be more people watching the red carpet of Spanish cinema than there have been all year watching Spanish cinema

.

On the other hand (on the other side of the abyss), the

Audiovisual Communication Law

that promises to irrigate the production of millions here fulfills its phase of allegations that coincides with the gala itself, with a good part of the independent producers on the warpath.

It seems like a technical issue, but a little closer look, it is not.

According to the text, 5% of the income from both television and

streaming

platforms must be used to finance independent European audiovisual production.

But, the new definition of independent that includes production companies dependent on private television (if you read it again, you understand) leaves production companies that depend on nothing but themselves at a disadvantage.

And so.

If we add to the above issues such as the current year's academic contempt for films such as

Brave Flash, Sacred Spirit

or

Six Current Days

(all three selected at international festivals), or the inability of an inefficient Film Law to put an end to precariousness in the most obviously author's production, the panorama stings.

But you have to love them.

«You are ugly, but I esteem you, fist!».
