Co-author Jillian Wilson, professor of physics and astronomy at UC Riverside, said MAGAZ3NE J0959 was discovered thanks to a survey designed to discover and study supermassive galaxies and their neighbors.

At the heart of MAGAZ3NE J0959 is a supermassive galaxy that has already formed a mass of over 200 billion suns, explained co-author Benjamin Forrest, a former postdoctoral researcher in Wilson's lab now based at UC Davis.

He added: "Why this supermassive galaxy and many of its neighbors formed and then became inactive when the universe was still very young, unlike other known primary clusters from the same time, this is a great mystery."
