A father posts a selfie with his two children, then kills them and commits suicide

Florida witnessed a horrific crime when a father killed his two children before committing suicide.

Father Umberto Christian Tovar Zapata, 41, posted on Facebook a "selfie" with his two young children, who he shot them less than an hour later, before aiming the gun at himself and committing suicide, according to the American newspaper, "The Daily Beast".

According to the authorities in the US state of Florida, the father published a picture of himself with his 12-year-old daughter, Baleria Tovar, and his 9-year-old son, Matthias Tovar, at 8:36 pm on Tuesday.

At 9:26 p.m., police were called over a shooting in Miami outside an apartment complex.

First responders at the scene found that Zapata and the children were already dead, according to Miami-Dade police.

The suspect's estranged wife, who is also the mother of the children, discovered the bodies near the apartment.

Local media reported that the mother was at home at the time of the incident.

Earlier that day, police said, they had an argument with Zapata over the whereabouts of their children.

The wife told a local media that he suffered from an untreated mental illness.

According to Al Arabiya.net, it was not clear whether the selfie that Zapata shared was taken just before the accident, or whether the suspect had used an old photo.
