The fire of thousands of tons of waste that has been smoldering for more than a month in a storage center in Saint-Chamas, near Marseille, polluting the atmosphere, is officially extinguished, according to a press release from the prefecture of Bouches-du-Rhône sent this Friday.

Environmental impact

“An examination of the composition of this waste still stored on the sorting site of the municipality of Saint-Chamas was carried out by a specialized laboratory, in order to proceed with their evacuation to an appropriate landfill, adds the prefecture.

These in-depth analyzes have made it possible to confirm that this waste, even after combustion, can be treated in a non-hazardous waste disposal facility.

And to specify: “The entire environmental impact of the incident will be the subject of a comprehensive and detailed analysis of pollution, conducted by the National Institute for the Industrial Environment and Risks, a public body.

The Atmosud measurement institute has noted a net decrease in daily concentrations of fine particles in the immediate vicinity of the site, very well below the population alert threshold, and this has been continuous since January 27.
