It was by a letter addressed to the mayor of Châteaulin that the news arrived.

Written by the public prosecutor of Quimper (Finistère), the letter evokes the legal proceedings concerning the accident of the gas methanizer operated by Engie.

In August 2020, an incident at the industrial site led to serious pollution of the Aulne, the river which supplies a large part of the population with drinking water.

For several days, 180,000 people had lived under restriction.

Several complaints had been filed by communities and associations.

The content of the prosecutor's letter clearly does not support them.

According to

Ouest-France

, justice is moving more towards a penal composition.

This procedure allows the defendant to admit his guilt by paying a fine.

The Engie Bioz group would thus escape a public trial.

“It looks like a political choice”

The factory had been closed for a month and a half at the end of the summer, by decision of the prefect of Finistère.

The latter had taken an order after a second incident that occurred on the same site, revealing "the weaknesses of the operator's risk prevention system".

Each time, a technical incident caused a tank of digestate to overflow into the river, causing serious pollution.

Questioned by our colleagues, the mayor Gaëlle Nicolas does not take off.

"We save a debate, it looks like a political choice," she told

Ouest-France

.

The associations that had filed a complaint think the same thing.

Water and rivers of Brittany denounces "environmental crime".

All are calling for "a real trial" to establish the reasons for this pollution.
