While his 15-year-old homosexual nephew had killed himself a week earlier, MP Stephen Jones paid him a poignant tribute on February 7, from the gallery of the Australian parliament: “Clearly, love and l “Acceptance from his family and friends will not have been enough”, regretted the representative of the Australian Labor Party, who intervened during the debate on a law likely to legitimize homophobia for religious reasons.

“Ollie, a handsome, creative and courageous young man, was gay, questioned his gender and had mental health issues,” said Stephen Jones.
We will no longer be able to accompany him with our love and support on his life's journey”.
He also spoke of his fears about his own son, who “wears heels that make [him] dizzy, and is potentially “threatened by the reception that may be given to him by the outside world”.
Through his intervention, Jones intended to denounce discrimination against LGBTQI+ people within Australian society.
He stressed speaking "on behalf of the families of all his children who dare to swim against the tide and be themselves".
