• The sixth season of Lille 3000 will start on May 14, 2022.

  • Emblems of this new season, giant green elves are made in Marquette-lez-Lille.

  • At the beginning of May, they will settle for four months on rue Faidherbe, in the heart of Lille.

When you enter the Saint-Roch workshops, it's hard not to be struck by the impressive welcome of a 4-meter-tall green elf.

This large figurine, from the imagination of Finnish designer Kim Simonsson, will be one of the stars of the sixth season of Lille 3000 called Utopia.

With nine other green elves, he will settle in rue Faidherbe, at the exit of Lille Flandres station, from May 14 and will stay there for more than four months.

But before discovering the city center of Lille, the Moss People, nickname of these funny characters, are made in Marquette in the famous Saint-Roch workshops where a team of eight people brings the artist's work to life.

They transform miniature sculptures into giants

“The sculpture does not belong to us.

We are here to transform it.

You have to be as faithful as possible to the artist's work”, summarizes Roger Belin, the company's president.

On their arrival in the North in wooden boxes, the Moss People do not measure more than 80 centimeters.

But from this model, a great structure will take shape.

“There are ten minifigures.

We scanned them all and modeled them in 3D.

From there, we integrated a steel structure inside.

We redesigned all the polystyrene cups.

Everything was recut, digitally milled and then integrated into the steel structures that we manufactured here,” continues Roger Belin, who develops his work.

“We reassembled, refined and re-emphasized the features to be as close as possible to the artist's work.

Then, we made a first layer of resin to block the polystyrene and a polyester resin.

Then we paint everything black and spray a layer of green synthetic fiber on it”.

Four to six meters high, 300 to 400 kilos

Started in January, the manufacture of these structures will end in early May.

On average, it takes a week to bring these elves to life, which will be between 4 and 6 meters tall and weigh between 300 and 400 kilos.

A week before the start of Lille 3000, the Ateliers teams will install and place these elves in rue Faidherbe on bases two meters high.

“It's gratifying to see it exhibited in the middle of the street,” admits the president of Ateliers Saint-Roch.

This is not the first time that the northern company has participated in rue Faidherbe in Lille 3000. In 2004, it was the company that manufactured the famous arches of Mézières.

Rebelote in 2009 with black babies angels and demons.

The company is therefore ready to take up this new challenge intended to impress and amaze the crowds.
