• With 38 million trips recorded in 2021, cycling is becoming essential in Lyon.

  • Some of you, followers of this mode of transport, estimate that it is less stressful, more pleasant and sometimes faster than the car.

  • But being a cyclist can be dangerous, say others.

Cohabitation with motorists is not always easy.

With nearly 38 million trips recorded in 2021 in the Lyon metropolitan area, cycling is becoming essential and attracting more and more users.

“Less polluting”, “more practical”, you say.

Since the arrival of ecologists at the head of the town hall and the metropolis of Lyon, the realization of urban developments to promote this mode of travel has greatly accelerated.

Patrice also uses his bike every day to get to his place of work.

“The journey on the quays of the Rhône is very pleasant”, he judges.

Same for Romain: "it wakes you up and puts you in a good mood in the morning", he adds.

.

But beyond the simple pleasure, the bike can be "very useful to avoid traffic jams" or the anxiety of public transport.

According to Alex, the difference is striking: “I feel freer and more fulfilled.

The car and public transport remain stressful.

The tension between bikes and cars

Even if the bike can be a way to evacuate bad energies before or after work, its practice can also be "very dangerous", according to Stéphane.

“Cyclists are not protected enough.

Cars pass us, cut us off the road.

I have already had my wheel veiled following a collision with a motorist who did not see me, he develops.

Cars are parked on the tracks and pedestrians walk on those on the sidewalks.

»

Some of you, however, share a completely different point of view.

Cyclists do not respect the Highway Code enough and put themselves in danger, argues Bernard.

“We gave them all the rights.

They do anything.

They run red lights, they drive on the sidewalks, they drive against the traffic where it is not allowed.

And so on,” he argues.

On the road, cohabitation remains generally difficult.

The reason ?

Cycle paths are sometimes considered “insufficient” or even “useless”, underline others.

"The metropolis can boast of kilometers of cycle paths but not of the practical level", ironically Jean-Luc.

"I don't understand the obsession with wanting to put contraflow cycle paths in narrow streets, where it's really dangerous to come across cars coming in front," agrees Aline.

Cyclists therefore want more safety for their bike journey.

With the implementation of the "Lyon routes", i.e. 400 km of cycle paths for 2030, future users hope to finally be able to transform all their journeys to arrive at work "in a good mood in the morning".
